Essex Location #02 Hoe Mill

Hoe Mill is one of the premier waterside locations in Essex, situated along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation near Ulting. Constructed in the 1790s to accommodate commercial barge traffic to Chelmsford, Hoe Mill is distinguished by the navigation’s highest drop of over eight feet. Originally serving a local corn mill, it is now a popular destination for boating, fishing, and camping, offering scenic vistas and numerous photographic opportunities.

Upon arrival, impressive images can be captured from the road, beginning with the lock gates—where slow shutter speeds offer compelling shots of water flowing through the canal joints. From the roadside parking area, proceed through the metal gate beside the lock gates for an unobstructed eastern view of the canal as it bends out of sight. Across the canal, a picturesque lock keepers cabin framed by two barges enhances the visual appeal.

Continuing along the canal, houseboats moored on the opposite bank present excellent opportunities for capturing images of boats winding with the canal’s curve. Further along the towpath, a bridge provides an elevated perspective looking back toward the road, where elements of the bridge can serve as striking foreground features in photographs.

On misty mornings, turning upstream from the bridge allows for atmospheric photography as the canal vanishes into the surrounding trees. This location is particularly effective just after dawn, when side lighting accentuates the scenery depending on the season. For optimal results, a good zoom lens and circular polarising filter are recommended, and drone photography may enhance views along the canal.

Directions: To access Hoe Mill Lock (Postcode: CM9 6RA) from the A12 in Essex, take junction 18 (A414) toward Danbury/Maldon. Head east on the A414 and turn left toward Woodham Walter. Continue through the village, following signs to Ulting and Hoe Mill. Parking is limited; a few off-road spots are available near the bridge. Please avoid parking in front of the gate to the adjacent field, as vehicles improperly parked there may be moved by the farmer.
